Reputation and Tests of Resolve in International Relations

3 November 2015 (Tue), 12:00 PM - 1:15 PM
At Saga College Private Dining Room

Professor Allan Dafoe of Yale University presented new research about the Chinese government’s resolve for action on the international stage. Professor Dafoe’s talk covered how the Chinese public’s support for foreign policy action, ranging from displays of aggression to the extension of controversial territorial claims, rises and falls depending on the reactions of other nation-states and the consistency of Beijing’s actions with its promises and declarations. Professor Dafoe’s research uses the results of surveys conducted in various parts of China tracking public opinion in response to foreign policy moves by the Chinese state to support this argument.
